The Machines
are a classic UK Punk, Rock 'n' Roll band formed by Nick Paul in 1977 in
the amphetamine rush of Punk, split in '78 and then regenerated in 2006.
The band all grew up listening to Iggy & The Stooges + The New York Dolls
and find this aesthetic still informs their sound. The band released the
incendiary 'True Life' EP in 1978 on Wax Records and appeared in the Alternative
Chart as published in Sounds, after True Life received a favourable reaction
after being played on the John Peel show. The EP was cited as one of the
‘100 Most Collectable Punk Records’ in Record Collector Issue 323, May 2006
and more recently in the March 2010 Record Collector (Issue 373) the EP
was listed in their 'Punk's Not Dead: 43 Lost Classics' feature, at a value
of £100. The band are known for their electric live shows both then (with Nick Paul, Duf and John Dee) and now (with Nick Paul, Stephen 'Tash' Reddihough and Steve Pegrum aka Steve Machine). The band played London punk venues The Vortex and The Roxy as well as many local shows, and the band continue to expand the areas they play in to this day. The concert in 2006 to celebrate the release of the 'Bored Teenagers Vol 4' compilation which featured two rare Machines demo tracks from 1977 prompted the band into action, and they immediately set about writing and recording newer material for their debut album, all the recordings of which are included here, making this a definitive Machines release. Since the bands regeneration in 2006, the Machines have played all over the country, and together with Engineer Barry Gardner recorded 10 new songs as heard on this CD. Bubblegum Slut fanzine perhaps described the band best, as "Classic punk, served New York Style." The tracklisting is: Racing, Cyclone, Perfect Black, Pirate Times, Weekend, Girl in Black, Chain Gang, Parents Zone, Sue This Song, Don't Be Fooled, Bonus Tracks: Racing (1977 Demo), You Better Hear (1977 Demo), True Life, Everythings Technical, You Better Hear, Evening Radio |
